GDPR violations landed Meta in serious trouble

As a violation of GDPR, Facebook’s owner, Meta, has been fined a record €1.2bn and ordered to suspend the transfer of user data from the EU to the US.


According to GDPR, there are strict restricts on transferring personal data outside of the European Union to third-party nations or international organizations.

As per recent announced by Irish Data Protection Commission [DPC], that Meta’s data transfers to the US did not adequately address the risks to individuals’ fundamental rights and freedoms and its involved in an violation of GDPR.

Data Privacy And its Importance

As a result of the violation Meta penalties $1.2 billion and given six months to suspend EU data transfers over the Atlantic, and user data must be erased from Facebook servers.


A similar occurrence occurs for Amazon in 2021 for similarly violating the EU's privacy rules

Andrea Jelinek, EDPB President, said the violation is “very grave since it involves transfers that are regular, frequent, and ongoing”. She also added that the unprecedented fine should warn other companies that “serious breaches have far-reaching consequences”.
